Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Canadian university accept a medical certificate from an online doctor?

Yes. All major Canadian universities — including University of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), Western, McMaster, Queen's, McGill, UBC, U of A, Dalhousie, and most others — accept medical certificates from any regulated, licensed health-care professional, including telehealth physicians. The form must be completed by a physician (or other regulated provider) who is licensed in your province. MediNote physicians are licensed by provincial colleges (CPSO, CPSBC, CPSA, CMQ) and complete each university's specific form template with the required signature, license number, and contact information.

Which Canadian universities does MediNote support?

MediNote currently supports university-specific medical forms for over 40 Canadian universities, including all major Ontario, BC, Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland universities. Each university has its own form (Verification of Illness, Student Medical Certificate, Attending Physician Statement, etc.), and MediNote uses the official template each institution publishes. Pick your university when booking and the physician will complete that specific form.

How much does a university medical certificate cost?

A flat $55 CAD covers the physician phone consultation and completion of your university-specific medical form. There are no additional fees and no clinic visit is required. Walk-in clinics typically charge $30-$80 plus 1-3 hour wait times — and many require an in-person visit or have limited evening/weekend availability.

How quickly can I get my form completed?

Same day. Most students book a phone consultation, speak with a physician within 2-6 hours, and receive the completed and signed form as a PDF in their MediNote dashboard the same day. You can then upload the form to your university's academic consideration portal or email it to your registrar.

What is the difference between a sick note and a Verification of Illness form?

A "sick note" is a generic letter from a physician confirming illness and dates of absence — accepted by employers and many schools. A university Verification of Illness form (or Medical Certificate, Student Health Certificate, Attending Physician Statement, etc.) is a specific template each university publishes. Most Canadian universities require their specific form rather than a generic sick note for academic consideration. MediNote uses the exact form your university publishes.

Do I need to be in the same province as MediNote's physicians?

Generally yes. Most provincial regulators require the prescribing/consulting physician to be licensed in the patient's province of residence at the time of consultation. MediNote physicians are licensed across Ontario, BC, Alberta, Quebec, and other provinces — you'll be matched with a physician licensed where you are. Check the booking page for current provincial coverage.

Can the doctor backdate my form?

Physicians can document a current medical assessment and the period of illness based on what you describe and clinical judgement. They cannot retroactively certify illness they did not observe. Book your consultation as soon as possible after the absence — universities typically require a current medical assessment for the dates of illness claimed.

What if my university is not in your list?

Even if your specific university is not pre-loaded in MediNote, your physician can complete a generic Canadian medical certificate that includes all standard required elements (your name, dates affected, physician's name, license number, signature, contact information, statement of medical necessity). Most universities accept this when their official template is unavailable. Contact us before booking if you have a non-listed school and we'll confirm.

Will my specific diagnosis be on the form?

No. University medical certificates require the physician to confirm a medical illness or injury affected your ability to attend or complete academic work — but they do not require disclosure of your specific diagnosis. This protects your privacy under PHIPA and provincial privacy laws. The form simply confirms a medical condition was present without specifying what it was.

Do I need a video appointment or just phone?

Phone only. MediNote consultations are by phone — no video, no app download, no waiting room. A licensed physician calls you at your scheduled time. The phone consultation typically takes 5-15 minutes and covers your illness, dates affected, and academic context.
