Long COVID in Canada: Symptoms, Recovery, and Support

Long COVID in Canada: ongoing symptoms, provincial support clinics, and management strategies.

Long COVID (post-COVID condition) affects an estimated 10 to 20% of people following a COVID-19 infection. Symptoms persist for more than 12 weeks and cannot be explained by another diagnosis. Common symptoms include fatigue (the most reported symptom), brain fog and difficulty concentrating, shortness of breath, chest pain, joint and muscle pain, sleep disturbances, anxiety and depression, and post-exertional malaise (worsening symptoms after physical or mental effort). In Canada, several provinces have established post-COVID clinics. Ontario funds long COVID clinics through Ontario Health. Alberta and BC have similar programs. These multidisciplinary clinics provide assessment, treatment planning, and rehabilitation. Management strategies include pacing (avoiding boom-and-bust activity patterns), graduated return to physical activity (under medical guidance), cognitive rehabilitation for brain fog, mental health support, and occupational therapy for return-to-work planning. If long COVID affects your ability to work, you may qualify for EI sickness benefits, short-term disability, or workplace accommodations under human rights legislation. A physician can provide documentation supporting these. Research into long COVID treatments is ongoing. Discuss current evidence-based options with your healthcare provider through an in-person or telehealth appointment. *This article is for informational purposes only.*
