Student Sick Notes: What Canadian Universities Actually Require

Student sick notes in Canada: when they\'re required, what they should say, and self-declaration policies.

Missing a test or assignment deadline due to illness is stressful enough without confusion about documentation requirements. Canadian universities have varying policies, and many have become more flexible in recent years. Many universities no longer require traditional sick notes for short absences. Following the University of Toronto\'s lead, institutions across Canada have adopted self-declaration policies that allow students to self-report illness for brief absences (typically 1 to 3 days) without a medical certificate. When a sick note is required (usually for longer absences, final exams, or final assignments), the note should confirm that you were assessed by a licensed healthcare provider, state that your condition prevented you from fulfilling your academic obligations, and indicate the duration of your incapacity. The note does not need to disclose your diagnosis. Telehealth-issued medical notes are accepted by Canadian universities. The method of consultation (in-person vs. virtual) does not affect the note\'s validity. If you are unsure about your institution\'s policy, check your faculty\'s academic calendar or contact the registrar\'s office. Some institutions have specific forms that must be completed. Fraudulent sick notes are a serious academic offence that can result in suspension or expulsion. *This article is for informational purposes only.*
