STI Testing in Canada: What to Expect and Where to Go

STI testing in Canada: what\'s tested, where to go, and what to expect. Most testing is covered by provincial health insurance.

Regular STI testing is an important part of sexual health, yet many Canadians are unsure where to go or what to expect. Understanding the process can make testing less intimidating. In Canada, STI testing is available through family physicians, sexual health clinics, walk-in clinics, and some telehealth platforms. Testing is confidential and, in most provinces, covered by provincial health insurance. Common STIs tested for include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B and C, and herpes (when symptoms are present). Testing typically involves a urine sample and/or blood draw, though some tests use swabs from affected areas. The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends regular testing for sexually active individuals, particularly those with new or multiple partners, men who have sex with men, individuals who use injectable drugs, and anyone with symptoms of an STI. Many STIs have no symptoms, which is why routine testing is important even when you feel well. Chlamydia and gonorrhea, for example, are often asymptomatic but can cause serious complications if untreated, including infertility. Results are typically available within 1 to 2 weeks. If a test is positive, treatment is available - most bacterial STIs are curable with antibiotics. *This article is for informational purposes only.*
